Advantage of tubular traction battery over flat traction battery.
Lead acid battery undergoes a corrosion process of the positive plate support during every charge cycle . It can not be avoided. This phenomena is known as anodic corrosion in battery technology.
To prevent premature failure of positive plates,the corrosion of the positive plate support should be limited to the surface only.
The corrosion should not penetrate in the cross-section of the plate support.
Casting process available are
a) Gravity pour casting
b) Low pressure pumping method
c) High pressure casting method.
Grids which make the plate support for the positive in a flat plate traction cell is made by gravity pour casting method. Such casting method leaves porous opening on the surface as shown by the Scanning Electron Microscope study.
The high pressure casting process can generate casting with single direction orientation of the grains which prevents creep.
Creep is a mechanical phenomena taking place in metals under stress there by weakening the metal member.
This stress is generated in the positive plate support in lead acid cells/battery when it expands in volume and is accelerated by the temperature reached in the charging process.
